Origins
On March 19th 1997, a group of University students formed a new students’ union. These students’ felt the urge of having a fully functioning student body who’s main concern were students. The newly formed organization would represent students, voice their concerns and defend their rights. Furthermore, the founders held that the organization will be named Pulse, the reason being that the sole purpose of its existence was to represent students.
Pulse being a politically oriented body which serves the role of a students’ union lies on the centre-left of the political spectrum. The organization is the sole Social Democratic student body that represent students on campus.
The news that a new students’ organization was set up was communicated to the media in a press release. A statue was drafted and the first executive board was appointed Mr. Reuben Fenech was elected President. Subsequently, a set of policy papers were drafted so as to clearly define the organization’s role and guide its representatives when it comes to decision making.
Pulse was officially recognized by the University of Malta Senate on the 16th September 1997 and the organization was granted an office within the UOM Students’ House.
